We often associate the gym with athletes and body builders. With the population becoming more health-conscious, the baby-boomers are changing the demographic at the gym. The fountain of youth we have all been searching for existed – and it's the gym!

We all know that living an active and healthy lifestyle slows the aging process and reduces the risk of preventative health issues. Not only does it have physical benefits, but mental and emotional health benefit as well. Exercise naturally boosts hormone production that make you feel happy and helps regulate adequate blood circulation from your head to your toes, fueling your brain with the oxygen it needs. Additionally, joining group classes and/or having a work-out buddy produces a sense of belonging, consistent exercise routine, and support group.

"Researchers determined that Silver Sneakers members who went to the gym two or more times a week over two years averaged at least $1,252 less in health care costs than those who visited a gym less than once a week over the same period" –

"Physical activity is more powerful than any medication a senior can take," Dr. Cheryl Phillips, a San Francisco physician and president of the American Geriatrics Society, told the Los Angeles Times. –

At the Fremont Health Club, we offer a class dedicated to seniors. The Senior Power class is taught by Tim Beauchamp CSCS. Tim developed this class for people 55 years and older who want to focus on strength and movement. These classes use unweighted calisthenics, balance movements, light weight exercises, individualized cardio, and finish off with ab work and a stretching to cool down. In addition to the Silver Power Class, Tim has worked with a wide variety of seniors with varying needs such as Parkinson's Disease.

"I absolutely love Tim's Silver Power class. It's the perfect mix of group warm up, independent time for weights and cardio at your own pace, then group stretching." – Marty

"Tim has been a pioneer and champ for seniors for over a decade. What I've loved about his Silver Power class is that he is so faithful in doing this class and he is there for one or ten people. I would say that his class has given me not only a routine that is well suited to my age of 75 years, but I am always more energized and motivated to keep coming back. I feel Tim has a heart for seniors, is committed to promoting fitness and well being, and his class is the perfect mix of exercise, cardio, and stretching. " – Marilyn

"I have been attending Tim's class fairly regularly for months and appreciate what he has to offer. It is a good series of stretching and warm up exercises that provide a good start to the day." – Kirk
